Before the school run, before the office, and before the community centres open, Pakistani mothers across neighbourhoods like Forest Gate, Upton Park, and Whitechapel are already negotiating their daily balancing act: work, childcare, and the pull of their community responsibilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cI leave the house at 7:30 a.m.,\u201d explained Ayesha, a teaching assistant in Newham. \u201cI drop the children at school, rush to work, then pick them up by three. After that, it\u2019s cooking, homework, and housework. My husband helps, but the pressure still feels heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Juggling Work and Family<\/p>\n
For many mothers, paid employment is not just about financial necessity but also identity and independence. \u201cI like contributing,\u201d said Farhat, who works part-time at a pharmacy. \u201cBut it\u2019s not easy when the children are small. Sometimes I feel guilty \u2014 am I giving enough time at home? At the same time, if I stop working, how will we manage bills?\u201d<\/p>\n
The rising cost of living has made dual incomes essential for many families. \u201cEnergy bills and rent eat up so much,\u201d Ayesha added. \u201cWe cannot depend on one salary anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Childcare Struggles<\/p>\n
One of the most common challenges mothers face is access to affordable childcare. \u201cNursery fees are almost as much as my salary,\u201d said Yasmin, who briefly left her job in retail because of costs. \u201cIn the end, it didn\u2019t make sense. I stayed home until my youngest started school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Extended family support, once the backbone of Pakistani households, is less available in London today. \u201cBack in Pakistan, grandparents or relatives help with children,\u201d Yasmin explained. \u201cHere, many of us are alone. My parents are in Karachi. My husband\u2019s parents are too old. We manage ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some mothers rely on informal networks. \u201cI drop my kids at a friend\u2019s house when I have late shifts,\u201d said Noor, a nurse. \u201cShe does the same when she\u2019s busy. It\u2019s community spirit \u2014 we help each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
Community Involvement<\/p>\n
Despite their busy schedules, many women still find ways to participate in community life. \u201cI volunteer at the mosque once a week,\u201d said Farhat. \u201cIt gives me peace. It also keeps me connected to other women. We share stories, tips, and sometimes just vent about the stress.\u201d<\/p>\n
These community connections often serve as an outlet. \u201cWhen we gather, we realise we are not alone,\u201d Noor said. \u201cEveryone is struggling with similar things: bills, schools, keeping children on the right path.\u201d<\/p>\n

Balancing roles also comes with cultural pressures. \u201cSometimes people say, \u2018Why are you working? Stay home,\u2019\u201d Ayesha admitted. \u201cBut times have changed. If we don\u2019t work, how do we build a better life for our children?\u201d<\/p>\n
Others highlighted the generational shift. \u201cMy mother-in-law never worked outside the home,\u201d Yasmin said. \u201cBut she encourages me. She says, \u2018This country is different, you must do both.\u2019 That support means everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many mothers, hope lies in stability and balance. \u201cWe want our children to do better,\u201d Noor said. \u201cThat is why we push ourselves \u2014 to give them chances we didn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n
