\u201cThis is one of the best things about living here,\u201d said Lubna, who attended with her husband and two children. \u201cYou walk into a festival like this and you see every community represented \u2014 Asian, African, Caribbean, English \u2014 all celebrating side by side. It feels like we belong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Unity Through Celebration<\/p>\n
Spring in Birmingham is marked by a series of multicultural festivals and fairs, often organised by the city council or local charities. For many in the Pakistani community, these gatherings are more than entertainment; they are an opportunity to connect with other communities and showcase their own heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a stall selling pakoras and chaat,\u201d said Iqbal, who runs a catering business. \u201cPeople from all backgrounds came to try them. It\u2019s a chance to share our food and culture. You hear someone say, \u2018This is delicious, what spice is this?\u2019 and you realise you\u2019ve built a connection.\u201d<\/p>\n
A Place for Families<\/p>\n
For children, the festivals provide an experience of joy and discovery. \u201cMy daughter tried face painting for the first time,\u201d said Amina, laughing as her six-year-old showed off a butterfly design. \u201cShe also joined a drumming workshop. It\u2019s good for them to see and try new things.\u201d<\/p>\n
Teenagers, too, appreciate the atmosphere. \u201cIt\u2019s cool to see so many cultures in one place,\u201d said Hassan, 15. \u201cIt makes you feel like being Pakistani is just one part of who you are \u2014 and that it fits into the bigger picture of being British.\u201d<\/p>\n
Breaking Stereotypes<\/p>\n
Some parents said these events also challenge stereotypes. \u201cOften, people see Pakistanis in one narrow way \u2014 either as taxi drivers, shopkeepers, or in the mosque,\u201d explained Lubna. \u201cBut here, people see us as neighbours, food lovers, artists, performers. It changes perceptions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Performances by local South Asian dance groups and Qur\u2019an recitation by children from the mosque added to the diversity of the day. \u201cIt\u2019s important for our children to see that our culture has a place on the stage alongside others,\u201d Iqbal said.<\/p>\n
Building Bridges<\/p>\n
Community organisers said the festivals are designed to strengthen ties. \u201cWhen people share food and music, barriers come down,\u201d explained one volunteer at the event. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about entertainment \u2014 it\u2019s about building trust and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pakistani families agreed. \u201cI spoke to a Jamaican grandmother who told me she\u2019d never tried biryani before,\u201d Amina said. \u201cShe loved it, and she shared her recipe for a traditional cake. That\u2019s how friendships start.\u201d<\/p>\n
A Sense of Belonging<\/p>\n
For many, these events also provide a sense of pride and belonging. \u201cSometimes, in the news, immigrants are spoken about in negative ways,\u201d said Hassan\u2019s father, Khalid. \u201cBut when you come here and see thousands of people of every background together, celebrating as equals, you remember that Britain is stronger because of its diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pakistani families say they hope these festivals continue to grow. \u201cWe want our children to grow up proud of both identities \u2014 Pakistani and British,\u201d said Lubna. \u201cEvents like these make that possible. They see themselves reflected here, not as outsiders, but as part of the fabric of this city.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the evening sun dipped lower, families packed away picnic blankets and children carried balloons and painted faces home.
