Surrounded by multiple cultures, traditions, and influences, they balance the expectations of their families with the realities of modern Britain.

Balancing Two Worlds

For many, identity is a daily negotiation. “At home, we speak Urdu and follow traditions,” says A., a 17-year-old sixth-form student. “At school or with friends, it’s completely different. Sometimes it feels like living two lives.”

Others see this balance as a strength. “It’s not easy, but it makes us more adaptable,” explains S., a university student. “We know how to move between cultures, and that’s a skill.”

Pressure and Expectations

Parental expectations remain strong. “Our parents want us to study medicine or law,” says T., a college student in Small Heath. “But some of us want to be artists, entrepreneurs, or athletes. It’s hard to convince them.”

M., a 19-year-old apprentice, describes the weight of representing both family and community: “You don’t just think about yourself. You think about how your choices reflect on everyone.”

Faith and Belonging

Religion is a central part of identity for many Pakistani youth. “Being Muslim in Birmingham means you’re visible,” says Z., a student in Sparkhill. “Sometimes it’s positive — people respect diversity. Other times you feel judged because of stereotypes.”

For some, faith provides resilience. “Prayers and community give me strength,” says K., a young woman in Alum Rock. “It helps me face challenges with confidence.”

Friendships Across Communities

Growing up in Birmingham means interacting with people from many backgrounds — Caribbean, Somali, Polish, and more. “Our school is like the world in one place,” laughs R., a 16-year-old student. “You learn so much from others, but you also learn to explain your own culture.”

Yet not all interactions are smooth. “There are moments of racism,” admits H., a 20-year-old in Aston. “Most people are respectful, but you never forget the times you’ve been treated differently.”

Gender and Freedom

Young women particularly highlight challenges. “There’s more pressure on us to behave a certain way,” says F., a college student. “We want independence, but also respect for our families. It’s a tightrope.”

Others point to progress. “My parents support me going to university and building a career,” says N., an aspiring doctor. “It shows things are changing, even if slowly.”

Politics and Representation

Some youth are politically aware, linking their identity struggles to wider debates. “When politicians talk negatively about immigration, it feels like they are talking about us,” says L., a university student. “It pushes us to speak up, to vote, to get involved.”

Community organisations in Birmingham run leadership programmes and youth forums, encouraging Pakistani youth to take active roles. These spaces give young people the confidence to express their dual identity as both British and Pakistani.

Looking Ahead

For Birmingham’s Pakistani youth, identity is not a fixed answer but an evolving journey. They are navigating faith, family, and culture alongside aspirations for education, careers, and wider belonging.

As one young man reflects: “We’re not just one thing. We’re British, Pakistani, Muslim, and Birmingham kids all at once. That’s our challenge — but also our strength.”

اردو خلاصہ

برمنگھم میں
