Smoking Death Toll in Region’s Highest Reported in Pakistan: Gallup Survey
Islamabad – A recent Gallup survey has revealed that Pakistan records the highest smoking-related death toll in the region, highlighting a growing public health crisis. Experts warn that tobacco consumption continues to claim thousands of lives annually, with serious implications for healthcare systems, economic productivity, and societal well-being.
According to the survey, a significant proportion of adults in Pakistan smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products, including hookah and smokeless tobacco. The study attributes the high death toll to prolonged tobacco use, limited awareness of health risks, and inadequate implementation of anti-smoking regulations in certain areas. Lung cancer, heart disease, respiratory illnesses, and strokes are among the leading causes of tobacco-related fatalities.
Health authorities are urging citizens to adopt preventive measures, including quitting smoking, reducing exposure to second-hand smoke, and participating in cessation programs. “Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of death in the country,” said a senior public health official. “Effective public awareness campaigns, stricter regulation, and accessible treatment programs are essential to curb this epidemic.”
The survey also revealed that smoking prevalence is higher among men and younger adults, raising concerns about the long-term public health burden. Experts recommend integrating anti-tobacco education in schools, workplaces, and communities to reduce initiation rates and encourage early cessation.
Public health NGOs have called on the government to strengthen policies, increase taxation on tobacco products, and enforce strict advertising bans. The combination of regulatory action and community engagement is viewed as critical to lowering smoking rates and associated mortality.
