Punjab Orders Closure of Schools in Small Buildings

The Punjab government has directed the closure of schools operating in small or unsafe buildings, citing concerns over student safety and the need for proper learning environments. The order, issued this week, applies to both public and private educational institutions that do not meet the minimum infrastructure requirements set by the education department.
Reason Behind the Decision
Officials explained that many schools across Punjab are functioning in cramped spaces with inadequate facilities, such as poor ventilation, weak structures, and limited classrooms. These conditions pose risks not only to students’ health and safety but also hinder effective teaching and learning.
“Education is not just about textbooks and teachers; the physical environment matters greatly,” said a senior education department representative. “We cannot compromise on children’s safety or their right to study in a secure and supportive atmosphere.”
Implementation of the Directive
The closure order will be carried out in phases. Education inspectors have been instructed to identify schools that fall short of the prescribed standards. Institutions found operating in small or unsafe buildings will either be shut down or directed to relocate to more suitable premises.
The government has also indicated that schools wishing to continue must shift to buildings that comply with structural safety, space, and facility requirements.
Impact on Students and Parents
While the move has been welcomed by many as a step towards improving educational standards, it has also raised concerns among parents. Some worry about the availability of alternative schools nearby, while others fear that relocation may increase expenses.
“We support better facilities for our children, but the government should also ensure affordable options,” said one parent whose child attends a small private school in Lahore.
Support and Alternatives
To minimize disruption, the education department is exploring ways to accommodate affected students in nearby government schools or larger private institutions. Discussions are also underway to provide support to smaller schools willing to upgrade their infrastructure.
A Step Towards Quality Education
The Punjab government has emphasized that this decision is part of its broader vision to uplift the education system in the province. By eliminating substandard schools and promoting safer learning environments, the authorities aim to ensure that every child receives not just education, but education of quality and dignity.
