Pakistan’s fertility rate drops significantly

Islamabad – Pakistan’s fertility rate has declined sharply in recent years, marking a demographic shift that experts say could have far-reaching implications for the country’s social and economic future.

According to the latest estimates from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and international agencies, the average fertility rate now stands at around 3.2 births per woman, a noticeable drop from 4.1 a decade ago. In some urban centers such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, the rate has fallen even further, edging closer to replacement levels.

Health experts attribute the decline to several factors, including greater awareness of family planning, increased female literacy, urbanization, and changing social attitudes toward marriage and family size. The government’s initiatives to improve access to contraceptives and reproductive health services have also played a role, though gaps remain in rural and remote regions.

Demographers argue that the falling fertility rate could provide Pakistan with a potential “demographic dividend” – a window where the working-age population is larger than dependents, creating opportunities for faster economic growth. However, they caution that without sufficient job creation, investments in education, and robust healthcare, the dividend could quickly turn into a liability.

At the same time, the decline raises questions about the long-term aging of the population. “If the fertility rate continues to drop unchecked, Pakistan may face an older population sooner than expected, putting pressure on pensions, healthcare, and social safety nets,” warned one demography researcher.

Government officials say they view the trend positively but stress that balanced policies are needed to support both population control and socio-economic planning.
